Happy 8 Month Birthday!

img_6616.JPG

Our sweet girl turned 2/3 of a year old last Friday - oh my how fast she is growing! Proof? Besides the fact that she is getting heavy, she now sleeps in 12 month pajamas! She’s so long that the 9 month ones just weren’t cutting it anymore. Speaking of sleeping…she’s now doing so unswaddled! It’s much easier to cuddle with her before bedtime now, and she just looks so darn cute rolled over on her side or on her tummy with Mr. Elephant close by. :)

Claire babbles constantly, usually some combination of “ba” or “da”, although we’ve heard just one “ma” - not “mama” - just “ma”. She’s a bit shy in front of strangers and doesn’t say much, but the minute she’s in the car it’s talk city! She also loves to blow raspberries. Her favorites are the big, slurpy ones that take a lot of concentration. These are fun for Mommy & Daddy too…when we’re not trying to feed her!

No new foods this month. We’re still trying to work out some mealtime kinks. It has not been a happy time lately, with Claire either pressing her mouth shut with a force you wouldn’t believe, or throwing an all-out crying fit. The good news is we’ve made some adjustments (mainly just taking her out of the high chair if she’s not readily eating and trying again later), and I’m happy to report that the past few days she’s gobbled down both fruit AND veggies. She’s not interested in eating the puffs just yet, only playing with them. She enjoys holding a piece of zwieback toast, but doesn’t eat much of it yet either.

Without a doubt, her favorite time of the day falls between 7 and 8 pm, during bedtime routine. She dances around with Mommy and Daddy to a slew of The Wiggles songs (appropriate, yes?) - her favorite being “The Monkey Song”, with “Shake Your Sillies” coming in as a close second. Next up is a bath with Mommy where we splash and play for up to 15 minutes or so. After bath, there’s crime to be fought, so Claire Super Cluck takes her nightly flight around the apartment. The fun ends and the fussing begins as teeth are brushed, nose is sucked and hair is brushed.

Claire is not very interested in crawling. When put on all fours, she’ll look up and smile for a minute before appearing very frustrated that she can’t go anywhere. Then she gives up, flops on her belly and wails.  Now WALKING - that’s a different story! She absolutely loves to hold our hands and “walk” around! She’s a bit of a daredevil, trying to stand on her own or with just one hand supporting her. She bounces and pants (yes, pants) after a couple of big high steps, tongue sticking out for the most part. She hasn’t started cruising yet and doesn’t understand that she needs to step to keep up with her push toy, but it looks like those milestones are right around the corner. I’m working on getting a video up of Claire showing off her new favorite talent.

img_6621.JPG

She has spent the past few weeks chewing, drooling and fussing more than usual and her nose is constantly overflowing - more teeth are on their way! I even became her first biting victim…ouch! She’s been having a bit of trouble sleeping through the night, but Tylenol seems to be helping with that. I think she’s working on her top front teeth, as well as some more on the bottom. She likes to gnaw on her finger, usually sticking it in the sides of her mouth. A photo below to illustrate the unbelievable runny nose. Notice the part that broke free and landed on her cute shirt from Aunt Nancy…take it shirt! :)

She still loves to read books. Her Lele sent her two new ones and she enjoys patting the furry animals and counting down the ladybugs. Anything with textures, counting or animals are favorites.

img_6625.JPG

Her little personality is really starting to shine through. She loves interacting with us, having “conversations” and tickle-fests. We’re hearing a lot more laughter these days and we couldn’t be happier about it! She likes to ride on my hip in the sling, whether we’re cooking dinner or shopping. Any toy that requires her to stand is a favorite - the piano and the activity table (thanks, Cousin Cash!) are both in need of new batteries from all their recent use. Claire is also a big help when it comes to laundry….minus the sock eating!

We continue to take her to rhyme time and are looking forward to the summer when she’ll start gymnastics and the weather will be playground-appropriate. And, of course, trips to the beach!

Claire’s 1st Valentine’s Day

Our little family of 3 had quite the busy day this past Saturday. Claire decided that Valentine’s Day should start at 6:00 am - an event that mommy and daddy are praying does not turn into a tradition. After a bottle, play time, breakfast and a morning nap, we dressed Claire in yet another heart-splattered outfit and headed to the library for weekly rhyme time. We ran into friends Trey, Sabrina and Carter (2 1/2 years) and the two kiddos enjoyed a Valentine-themed session, complete with bubbles and hand stamps.

After rhyme time, we swung by Chick-fil-a then headed to a nearby neighborhood to check out a possible future home. The verdict was that the home was nice - not perfect - and definitely over priced. It was actually right across the street from the 3rd home that we placed an offer on…and lost.

Next up was a trip to Sam’s Club to purchase contacts for me and to invest in a new pair of transitional glasses for Eric. He picked out a nice pair of frames that look really good on him. We’ll pick them up in a week or two. I don’t know why, but Claire seems to really like Sam’s Club. She was full of smiles and laughs…I’m sure it had nothing to do with getting to ride on daddy’s shoulders!

After an afternoon nap (Claire and Mommy) and some R&R (Daddy), we piled back into the Escape in search of a swing set. The weather was nice, but the sun was fading fast. The park that we used to visit pre-Claire lacked playground equipment, as did the next one we tried. But our third attempt was successful and we found swings, slides, and a toddler-sized basketball court! I could see Eric imagining the day he would play a game of one-on-one with his little wiggle worm. :)

Claire absolutely loved the swing! Below is one of my favorite pictures from the day and a video of her first swing set experience. There are a lot more pictures in the updated February 2009 photo gallery - enjoy!

Videos: Talking, Flying & Reading

She speaks!

Claire Bear has expanded her vocabulary to include “ba” and “da” - neither one meaning anything as far as we can tell. She started babbling “da” last Tuesday (when the video was taken) and “ba” followed shortly thereafter. She will carry on a conversation with just about anybody…make that anything! She was a bit sleepy in the clip below and was fighting it with talking and biting my nose.

Super Cluck

Our little crime-fighter continues her after-bath tradition of flying around with her daddy and loves it more and more each night. It’s a bit difficult to catch them on video (she’s fast!), but below is my best attempt.

Story time

While not quite as entertaining as Super Cluck, Claire and I have started our own tradition of reading stories before bed. Actually, we read books constantly, not just at bedtime. She LOVES it - especially her “Peek-a-Baby” book. My personal favorite is reading her “Baby Dear” from the original copy I loved as a little girl.

Busy Weekend

Eric’s mom, Shirl (aka Grandma), came to Raleigh last week to stay with us for a couple of days. She, along with our youth minister, Aurelio, and his family, were in the stands cheering the Dragons on to yet another win! It was an entertaining game and we were all proud of the coach and his team. Claire got to hang out with Aurelio’s son, Uriah, a friend she made when their dads played in the church basketball league. He’s about the same age as Cousin Cash, so she’s quickly learning how to hold her own with the older boys. :)

Grandma and Claire got lots of quality time in on Friday while I put in a few hours at the office and then had a minor procedure done at the dermatologist’s office. She was even gracious enough to continue her babysitting duties into the evening, giving Eric and I a chance to meet up with some friends for some family-style feasting at Maggiano’s. YUM!

We took Claire to Portrait Innovations on Saturday for her Valentine’s Day pictures. She was an absolute ham and didn’t take a single bad picture. She’s really got this smiling and posing thing down! Of course, she was sporting another adorable outfit from her Auntie Bonnie. Pictures go out in the mail tomorrow, so be looking for them! I’ll also post them later on this week. After her pictures, we finally got to thank Grandma properly via a big Cracker Barrel breakfast.

After a spaghetti lunch at church on Sunday, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and let Claire explore our neighborhood playground. She wasn’t that impressed with the slide, but she did love her some monkey bars! She’s got incredible upper-body strength! I wish there was a swing set here, I’m pretty sure she’d love that. I’m hoping for more nice weather this weekend so she can test out swinging at a nearby public park.

Last year, it was right around Valentine’s Day that we learned the little peanut in my belly was going to be a girl. Of course, a mini shopping spree followed shortly and Claire is now reaping the benefits of several heart-themed outfits.  My favorite pics of her modeling two of them are below. Also, there’s a new photo gallery up - February 2009 - make sure to check it out!
