Welcome to the Stafford family blog! For three years we were two, but are now blessed to be a family of three. We'll use this site to keep friends and family updated on every smile, burp & coo from our precious little one. Who knows - we might even throw in some info about what's going on with Mom & Dad, too! :)

Future Beethoven

I will readily admit that while I enjoy music, I have no talent in that area whatsoever. Eric claims to play the guitar, although I’ve never actually seen or heard it. Nonetheless, I had always hoped that our children would be blessed with some musical ability.

Although it’s probably too early to tell if Claire has a future in playing the piano, one thing is quite evident - she LOVES it!! I picked up her new favorite toy at the huge consignment sale last weekend for only $5 and I’m beginning to think it’s the best $5 I’ve ever spent!

She laughs, jumps and pounds the keys with delight - only stopping to make sure we’re watching and to give us ample time to praise her. :) She can stand by herself, but is still a bit unsteady, so we have to stay close by. I think the piano can be adjusted to sitting level, but we all know that this wiggle worm would much rather stand!

Enjoy the picture and video below of our little super star…

Also, I’ve updated the January 2009 photo gallery - more piano playing, our beach trip this past weekend, messy mealtime, Daddy & Claire fun…it’s all in there!

Super Cluck

Watch out world. There is a new chick in town. Super chick that is. :)

img_6346.JPG

Claire and Daddy have started an after-bath tradition of flying around the apartment, zooming high and low while looking to help those in need (usually only finding mommy doing chores). Although I can’t say much for Super Cluck’s ability to make sandwiches, I’ve never seen a cuter smile! Watching the two of them play warms my heart - Claire is so lucky to have a daddy who dotes on her the way he does. I’m wondering what they’re going to do when she outgrows her chicken towel…

She’s 7 Months - SNOW Kidding!

img_6282.JPG

The Lord sent Claire a glorious present for her 7 month birthday - beautiful, white, fluffy snow! The three of us enjoyed the day at home (although I still had to work remotely), watching with awe as the snow continued to fall. We bundled Claire up and took her into the winter wonderland three times, only one of which she tolerated. She actually decided that sleeping was more fun than playing in the snow and took some amazingly long naps.

img_6246.JPG

img_6290.JPG

Daddy built Claire her very first snowman - complete with a rhinestone mouth and a cupcake hat! Too cute! After numerous attempts, we finally convinced Claire that sitting next to the snowman would be fun. And what do you know…we were right! She was in such complete amazement with him that clapping, whistling, and anything else we did to get her attention fell on deaf ears for the most part. But like everything else that gets her attention, it didn’t last that long and she then showed Mr. Snowman his punishment…

img_6284.JPG

But, we had fun all the same and managed to get some cute photos. New photos, including more from rhyme time, our snow day and her 7  month “photo shoot” are in the January 2009 gallery - check them out!

No huge post for her 7 month birthday, considering that 5 days ago I wrote a novel on her growth and development. :) BUT - it is important to note that (1) she now knows where Mr. Elephant is while having her diaper changed and will reach for him immediately; (2) she can stand by herself when holding on to the sides of her jungle gym, with us close by and ready to catch her of course.

Rhyme Time

This past Saturday morning, we took Claire to the library for rhyme time. Fun songs, movement, rhymes and LOTS of clapping…it was right up Claire’s alley! Eric and I had a great time watching her little eyes light up and we’ve been incorporating some of the new songs and rhymes we learned into our nightly “family dance time”.

Still just the bottom two, but here’s a much cuter picture of those little teeth! (Click on the picture to get a better view.)

Videos From Month 6

Sitting up like a big girl!

Although this could be considered a very boring video, I was so proud of Claire doing a great job of sitting up all by herself!

And maybe slightly more entertaining is this out take (don’t worry, no babies were harmed during the filming of this video!)

Bouncy, bouncy!

Claire demonstrating her jumping skills, with a little encouragement from daddy!

6 3/4 Month Report

img_5655.JPG

Claire turned the big 1/2 of a year on Dec. 20, the same day we flew to AR. I did mange to sneak in the oh-so-important photo session that day, but with all the chaos of the holidays, I’m WAY behind in writing her “official” 6 month post. In fact, she turns 7 months in 5 days. How’s that for late? Thus, here’s a summary of all things new in the life of Claire (I apologize in advance for the super lengthy post, but I want to keep a record of this important time for Claire to read one day).

She has teeth! Her two bottom ones emerged simultaneously while we were in AR. With their appearance came a 101 degree fever, a snotty nose and an unhappy Wiggle Worm. Once we figured out that her fussiness was from teeth and not jet lag, we doled out the Tylenol and quickly saw a much happier girl. I’m not sure Claire would agree, but I think it was all worth it because they are the two cutest teeth I’ve ever seen! Her pediatrician says the top teeth are on their way, due to some red, puffy gums. It’s hard to get a good picture of the teeth because when she smiles, the tongue comes out and covers them, but below is my best attempt. You can see the two tiny teeth, although I wouldn’t say it’s the best picture of Claire.

img_6173.JPG

Cousin Cash graciously lent Claire his super cool Rain Forest jumparoo back in December, but Claire didn’t really seem to understand it’s coolness until this month.  These days she thinks it’s the greatest toy ever made. She jumps as hard as she can, usually keeping her tongue out, and spins around to play with all the toys.

img_6151.JPG

For quite sometime we’ve noticed that when laying on her back, Claire will try to sit up, but this past month it’s been a constant occurrence.  You can’t even change her diaper without her little head popping up and her tummy muscles straining. If you offer her your hands, she’ll quickly grab them and use them to pull herself up. Usually, the sitting position is not thrilling enough, she would much rather stand. Once doing so, she has this look of pure joy and accomplishment on her face. It’s amazing to watch how grow and develop - those little legs are strong!

Claire continues to try and like a variety of foods. So far she’s had carrots, peas, green beans, peaches, applesauce, squash, sweet potatoes, pears and bananas. She went through a stage last week where she refused to eat just about anything but fruit. I quickly put an end to that by only offering her vegetables. I figured she’d eat them if she was hungry enough. Worked like a charm. :) Her tastes seem to constantly change, but she’s always been a big fan of peas and bananas. The only food she didn’t care for was carrots, and so did momma because of all the laundry they brought on. But, this week, she likes them. Next week - who knows? Mixed foods like prunes with apples and banana combos are next. Yummy!

img_5667.JPG

We still have to work hard to get a laugh out of Claire, but it is now possible to hear one without tickling her.  The other day I discovered that bopping her on the head with a rolled up newspaper ad was absolutely hilarious to her. Of course, now we’re constantly bopping her on the head. That only gets a few looks from people… :) I am looking forward to the day where she lets me hear that giggle a bit more. She still coos and talks to us, but I guess we’re still not funny enough to warrant full on laughter.

She can sit up all by herself! She showed off her new skill the week we got back from AR and could only do it for a minute or two before toppling over. But now, she’s really getting the hang of it. We still have to watch her closely or put the Boppy pillow behind her, but it won’t be long before she’s a pro. She usually falls because she’s decided to try and push herself to the standing position or because she’s bored. As long as she’s entertained and happy, she stays balanced.

img_6175.JPG

Claire has really taken to reading stories. One of my favorite things to do is to cuddle up with her in the glider and read picture books, pointing out the different colors, shapes and animals. She’ll last for about 2 stories or so before that arm goes up by her ear and she starts wiggling, letting me know she’s had enough. Another one of her favorite activities is dancing around with mommy or daddy. From the Mamma Mia soundtrack (my fave!) to the Wiggles (fitting, yes?), she likes it all. Especially when daddy holds her and helps her mimic the movements her silly mommy is making. I can now do the Hokey Pokey in my sleep… :) We’re planning on taking her to story and song time at the local library on Saturday morning - I think she’ll really enjoy it.

As evident from the pictures in the recent photo galleries, Claire has discovered her tongue. And my is it exciting. So exciting that she wants to show it to us CONSTANTLY. You want a smile, mom? You get a tongue for free. Enjoy. :)

img_6142.JPG

Although still a good sleeper, lately she’s been waking up at 5:45 am instead of the usual 6:45 or so. Considering she’s still sleeping roughly 10 hours, even while teething, we can’t complain too much. She is napping better, which is a welcome change on the days I work from home. The past two weeks or so I’ve gotten at least one 2 hour nap a day, if not more.

I took Claire to see Doctor Coleman last Friday for her 6 month check-up and shots. She got her regularly scheduled vaccinations as well as a flu shot. Unlike the previous times, she ran a 103 degree fever that night and was up every 2 hours. Plenty of Tylenol, hugs and 24 hours later, she was back to her happy self. She’s continuing with a big growth spurt, weighing 16 lbs, 13 oz and falling in the 55% for babies her age. She’s shooting upwards as well, a whole 27 1/4 inches and in the 80% for height. She’s come a long way from the itty bitty thing she was for so long! We are so blessed to have a healthy little girl!

She’s finding more joy in her toys these days. New ones include her laptop and cell phone. Yep, she’s definitely OUR daughter! However, she can stay entertained for quite some while with the plastic bottle and food lids. Anything that can be chewed on is a favorite. And for some reason, non-toys are the best ones of all. When sitting in her Bumbo seat on our bathroom counter, it doesn’t matter which toy you give her, she undoubtedly will go for the contact lens solution or vitamin bottles.

img_6097.JPG

For the longest time, Claire has seen her bath as just that. A bath. Nothing special or fun. She would just sit on her little tub seat, with her hands crossed over her big belly and watch as we washed her. We didn’t mind - we stayed dry as did the floors. Not anymore! This week she discovered the art of splashing. Although still a bit tentative, she’s definitely finding joy in using her hands and feet to create waves. I’m debating on posting the video…not sure what the protocol for showing naked babies is… :)

She’s started to drink water from a sippy cup. Well, she really just throws the cup around and every now and then will let water fall off her tongue. She hasn’t quite figured out the art of sucking and swallowing from the cup yet. However, it’s still entertaining to watch. :)

img_6158.JPG

As you can see, a lot has happened over the past month or so! In other news, our camera’s flash decided to burst, so we quickly replaced it with a newer, much-improved model. My fave feature - it removes red eye! Yay! Maybe I will actually be able to get pictures posted quicker now that the most time-consuming editing task is a moot issue. Speaking of which, photo galleries will now be organized by month - mainly because I am having way too much trouble trying to remember our little booger’s weekly age! Check out the three new galleries - Christmas in Arkansas photos, 6 month photos and January photos. A post with several videos is coming tomorrow….

Arkansas Christmas - Stafford Edition

Christmas celebration #3 was with Eric’s paternal grandma, affectionately named “Big Grandma”, and the rest of the Stafford clan. This year was extra special in that cousins David and Lori, along with their kids Lilly and Daniel, were able to join us. After a traditional meal that was absolutely fantastic, we gathered in the living room to watch the little ones open presents. The adults knew that the best present of all, Grandma’s homemade pies, would be coming soon. :)

As tradition goes, presents are given to children up until they graduate from high school. For the past couple of years, that meant only Haley and Avery, but this year the present exchange was on a grander scale. Haley, Daniel, Lilly, Avery, Cash and Claire enjoyed ripping through gift after gift. Again, Cash and Claire would probably have been happy with just some wrapping paper and a box - too bad that will changes soon! A big thank you from Claire for all the cute clothes and fun toys!

Full photo galleries from all of our Christmas celebrations will be posted this week - I promise! In the meantime, enjoy the pics below:

Playing with Auntie Bonnie & Daddy

Here are two video clips taken while we were in Van Buren. The first shows Claire and her Auntie Bonnie in a boxing fight. Claire is super strong and shows no mercy, really giving it all she’s got! Luckily her Auntie Bonnie is a trooper and just kept taking it, happily I might add! :)

The second is Claire and Daddy playing what we call “Capture the Beast”. The “beast” is obviously Daddy’s hand and the objective is for Claire to capture it before it gets her belly. If she’s successful, she usually punishes the beast by eating it, but she decided to let him go this time, favoring the oh-so-interesting high-chair straps instead. That beast better watch out….her incoming teeth are sharp!

Arkansas Christmas - Angus Edition

Happy New Year to all! We are happy to be back home safe and sound after 13 Christmas-filled days in Arkansas. We flew into Fort Smith on Dec. 20 (Claire’s 6 month birthday - more on that later) and spent about 6 days with my family in Van Buren before heading up north to celebrate the holidays with Eric’s family in Siloam Springs.

This was Claire’s second time to fly to Arkansas (she was 6 weeks old before) and unfortunately she didn’t fare as well on the flight this time. Chalk it up to teething, ears popping, or just plain tired, but she put up a fight on both legs (especially the second) before falling asleep. However, she had no trouble whatsoever sleeping on my lap in the Atlanta airport during our layover!

img_5691.JPG

We attended church with my family on Sunday and spent the next couple of days resting and playing way too much Wii. Bowling, skiing, even acting like penguins eating fish…all very fun! Monday night we stopped by Robert, Aerren and Caleigh’s house to visit, exchange gifts and pick up some baby gear. A HUGE thank you to them for loaning us a high chair and a tub full of toys to use during our stay! Caleigh gave Claire her very first laptop, so she can be just like her super techie mom and dad! It’s adorable and although she’s not into pushing the buttons just yet, she gets a big kick out of opening and closing it. :) Caleigh was super excited to see Claire, and loved the cupcake hat we brought her - especially since she and Claire could now be twinkies! I enjoyed visiting with Aerren so much and always wish that we lived closer and could see each other more often.

Tuesday evening, LeLe treated me, Auntie Bonnie and Aunt Brit to a girl’s night at the local nail salon. Claire tagged along and played happily in her car seat while I relaxed with a pedicure, a glass of wine, and some yummy appetizers. It was fun to see some of the old VB crowd and to enjoy some much-needed pampering.

Great Grandma Carole came in from Dallas on Wednesday and instantly became Claire’s new best friend. I’ve never seen a great grandma with that much ENERGY! Claire absolutely loved all the attention. The two of them played for hours, each one entertaining the other. I begged Great Grandma Carole to come live with us in Raleigh! :) We took a lot of photos of Claire on her lap, smiling like a goober, that are coming in a gallery soon, but the one below is my favorite.

img_5863.JPG

Claire was completely spoiled by both attention and gifts from the rest of my family as well. Her Auntie Bonnie bought her the CUTEST Christmas outfit, complete with a matching tulle puff for a hair bow. Uncle Reag picked out several adorable outfits, including a Baby’s 1st Christmas onesie that she wore for about 10 minutes before sending to the laundry - but it was long enough to snag a photo!

img_5743.JPG

img_5867.JPG

I took Claire to lunch at TGI Friday’s on Christmas Eve - a tradition with my girlfriends from high school. It was great to see everyone, especially Melissa’s newest addition, baby Maycie. I couldn’t believe how small she looked compared to my munchkin. It seems like much longer than a few months ago that Claire was that small. She was on her best behavior and was passed from friend to friend, smiling for photos (with the help of her silly mommy). She walked away from the lunch with two super cute outfits, gifts from her “Aunt” Carrie. Thank you - look for pictures of her in them soon!

img_5781.JPG

Unfortunately, LeLe was under the weather for most of our visit and tried to keep her distance from Claire so as not to get her sick. This isn’t an easy task when you’re a long-distance grandma who wants to see her grandbaby! They did manage to get a bit of play time in and I’m sure it won’t be long before we’re booking a ticket to Raleigh for her to visit. Poppy and Great Nanny enjoyed Claire’s toothless grins and new tricks as well. Somehow Poppy managed to avoid my camera, but we’ll get him next time!

img_5726.JPG

The day after Christmas, we borrowed LeLe’s car (a big thank you!) and headed up north to spend several days with Eric’s family. More on that part of our trip and Claire’s 6 month post coming soon…

Photo galleries coming soon - in the meantime, here are a few more of my favorites:
